Pottery Miniatures

The making of clay pots and the weaving of baskets are the two oldest handicrafts. Mexican alfareros (potters) produce terracotta-ware made from natural clay fired in simple kilns in a variety of indigenous styles. Pottery villages have grown up near the sites of natural clay deposits. Each region produces their pottery in a distinctive combination of surface finish, color and design such as barro canela (the Tonalá pottery made of cinnamon-scented clay), and the burnished earthenware such as the unique black pottery from San Bartolo de Coyotepec, Oaxaca.

Size of Miniatures: All measurements are approximate as all items are handmade and may differ one from the other.  Be sure to read each description as some items are not actually to-scale but we offer them because they are unusual and might possibly fit into your collection.

SPECIAL POTTERY
Following are some very special handmade pots by some of Mexico's finest ceramicists.

San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca Black Pottery - the famous "black pottery" of Oaxaca in miniature is very difficult to find. The color is not painted on but is achieved during the firing process.

Pottery of Florentino Jimon Barba - each piece is signed by the artist and these are truly collector's pieces as Florentino has achieved a high status among the potters of Mexico.
