Hacienda Style
Casal Mayólica Ceramics

Majólica Chicken PotSeveral years ago, Hacienda Style purchased Casal, the last factory in Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato that makes all their mayolica pieces by hand-turning or "torteado." The process is similar to making a tortrilla - banging clay by hand to get the shape.

The glaze formulas are the same ones used for over 100 years. Casal is the best known producer of the crackled, antique style finish. Also, each piece is 100% hand painted.

They make tiles, sinks, murals, plates, platters, vases, and much more. Their customers are worldwide and include Neiman Marcus, Mandaly Bay, Ritz Carlton, just to name a few.Special orders are welcome.

Majólica JarMayólica is ceramics, but not all ceramics are Mayólica. The word Mayólica is thought to be a corruption of "Majorca," an important port of trade between Spain and Italy through the 1400's. The Italian’s used the word mayólica to denote the generic term for tin-glazed earthenware. In the 6th Century AD, Arabs found that certain mineral oxides, once dissolved in water, could be absorbed on the porous surface of fired clay. The piece was decorated and, once fired a second time, the object then became Mayólica - white glazed, often painted over with beautiful decorations and, most importantly with a hard, smooth surface having qualities similar to porcelain.

Majólica PlatterMayólica has a great appeal for the average shopper, collector, and for many artists - Picasso for example who collected Mayólica. The main reason is most likely that the creative process of making Mayólica remains the same as it was 500 years ago. The potter may now have an electric wheel, instead of pushing a pedal to throw the clay. The wood burning kilns have been replaced by electric kilns, but all the work that goes into creating a Mayólica piece follows the same ancient tradition - especially hand painting, where quality and artistry define a true Mayólica piece.

Majólica dishMayólica pottery does contain lead. Without lead, the crackle finish would not be possible to produce. Therefore, purchase your Mayólica pieces for limited daily use or to enjoy as a beautiful decorative piece.

The folk art designs of Hacienda Style were enjoyed by customers in 2004 & 2005 Feria Maestros del Arte exhibition. Watch for them again in 2007.
