Before agriculture, before ceramics, 6,000 years before Christ there was basketry. As cultures developed, crude baskets became important for carrying food along trade routes. The weaving of baskets continues today utilizing a wide variety of plants, including rushes, reeds and grasses, leaves of palm trees, willow twigs, cane and fibers derived from various types of cactus plants.
